We can’t forget the Extra Sister: the ancient African rice. Enslaved African women wove rice grains into their hair and braids to secretly preserve seeds from their homeland during the horrible slave transportation to the Americas. When they arrived in the Americas, they planted these hidden seeds, laying the foundation for rice cultivation across the Western Hemisphere. We honor the people who built the country: stolen labor on stolen land.
Ancient African rice cast in a replica of a ‘Baardman kruik’, an earthenware Bellarmine jug from 1620-1630, with the seal of Amsterdam.
