The “Three Sisters” are corn, beans, and squash, the crops of many Indigenous peoples in North and Central America that were grown together. They form a self-sustaining system: the corn acts as a stake for the beans, the beans add vital nitrogen to the soil, and the squash leaves cover the ground to trap moisture and block weeds. A winning trio.
The corn, beans, and pumpkin seeds are cast in solid resin jugs. These are small replicas of an original 1620-1630 ‘Baardman kruik’, Bellarmine jug with the seal of Amsterdam. These jugs were also brought on the ships of colonizers who invaded Manahatta and founded New Amsterdam, later called New York. The Lenape helped the colonists survive the harsh winters by bringing them food, and in return they were murdered and expelled.
